Marketing and Communications Manager

We are seeking to appoint a highly-motivated, self-starter with a strong working knowledge of the complete marketing mix from traditional PR through to social media.  Candidates should have a track record of delivering successful marketing and PR campaigns and experience in an educational setting would be advantageous but is not essential.

Post: We are seeking to appoint an experienced and highly-motivated Marketing and Communications Manager.
The ideal candidate will be someone who relishes the prospect of promoting one of the North-West’s leading independent girls’ schools and has a track record for delivering marketing and PR campaigns that get results.
A real self-starter, the person will form an integral part of the School’s small but highly productive Development and Marketing Department and will have a strong working knowledge of the complete marketing mix, from traditional PR right through to social media.


Responsible to: The post holder will be directly responsible to the Director of Development and Marketing.


Hours: 37 hours per week 8.30am – 4.30pm (with 30 minutes unpaid lunchbreak) This is a full time post and its nature is such that the post holder will be expected to work such hours as are reasonably necessary in order to fulfil the duties in a professional manner.
Attendance at some events that take place outside of usual working hours, such as Open Events and the School’s Celebration and Awards Evening, will be necessary. Time in lieu will however be given with the prior agreement of the Head Mistress.


Salary Grade: Point 32 to 35 (£29, 345 - £31,715) on the MHSG support staff scale, per annum.


Holidays: The holiday year runs from 1st September to 31st August. In addition to the usual public holidays you are entitled to 25 paid working days’ holiday in each full holiday year worked, increasing to 28 paid working days’ holiday after 2 years’ continuous service and increasing to 33 paid working days after 5 years’ continuous service, accruing pro rata in each calendar year.


Job Description
Purpose of Job:
To work alongside the Director of Development and Marketing, and Head Mistress, to agree and deliver a marketing and PR strategy that proactively positions Manchester High School for Girls as one of the North West’s leading independent schools and a highly desirable prospect for potential pupils and their parents.


Key Responsibilities:
Strategy and Planning:
 Work alongside the Director of Development and Marketing to prepare and deliver the annual marketing and PR plan
 Understand and be able to articulate the ethos of Manchester High School for Girls clearly and fluently, utilising the full range of marketing platforms (advertising, PR, web, print, social etc.)
 Feed in to the budget setting process and manage the Marketing portion of the set budget efficiently
 Understand the competitive marketplace in which Manchester High operates and keep up to date with the activities/positioning of rival schools
 Carry out market research as appropriate (catchment data, Open Event surveys etc.), analysing information and making recommendations to the School’s Senior Leadership Team as appropriate
 Prepare, three times a year, a formal update on marketing activity to inform reports prepared by the Director of Development and Marketing for the School’s Governors


Marketing:
 Act as guardian of all things ‘brand’, taking necessary steps to ensure the School’s brand guidelines are adhered to at all times
 Prepare the annual schedule of promotion for the School’s Open Events, utilising a wide range of marketing channels to attract maximum numbers of potential pupils and parents
 Attend events, such as Open Days, as and when required, ensuring that all visitors leave having enjoyed a positive interaction with the School community
 Maintain strong working relationships with target feeder schools and nurseries, ensuring the database of all is kept up to date
 Work alongside the Director of Development and Marketing to prepare every three years (or as required) a new prospectus for the School
 Take ownership of the School’s website, producing regular content, managing format and appearance
 Manage the School’s social media platforms, ensuring they are regularly updated with engaging content and followers are interacted with and responded to in the appropriate manner and timeframe
 Coordinate end-to-end production of both the Senior School and Preparatory Department magazines, writing articles, arranging photography and liaising with the selected agency on design and print
 Take photographs and videos of school activities that can be used for promotional purposes, always following consent guidelines
 Provide clear briefs (written and verbal) to outside agencies in relation to printing, promotional items, design work, website development and school uniform
 Adapt in-house templates to produce marketing materials


PR:
 Maintain close links with the local and national media, as well as the educational trade press, securing positive PR coverage for the School
 Constantly seek out good news stories from within the School community and draft press releases, photo opportunities and features to be ‘sold in’ to relevant journalists
 Work alongside the Director of Development and Marketing, Head Mistress and Senior Leadership Team to manage the School’s response to any issues that may pose a risk to the excellent reputation of Manchester High School for Girls


Administration:
 Adhere to all relevant compliance procedures for the Department, including GDPR regulations and photography consents
 Record PR coverage and update cuttings books
 Maintain the ‘celebrations’ board in the main reception of the School
 Manage stock levels and place orders for marketing materials


Other:
 Undertake any other duties and responsibilities as specified by the Head Mistress
 Undertake regular professional training and development to ensure the School is aware of the latest advancements in the industry and at the forefront of marketing and PR

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
 A commitment to safeguarding children and promoting their welfare at all times
 Empathy with the principles, ethos, aims and aspirations of the independent school sector, and girls’ day schools and of MHSG in particular
 An understanding of the competitive market and political climate that independent schools operate in
 A strong working knowledge of marketing and PR, with a proven track record for delivering highly visible promotional campaigns and securing PR coverage
 Initiative, drive and enthusiasm; the ability to self-motivate and hunt down potential news stories
 First class communication skills, both written and verbal
 Strong proof-reading skills and a commitment to accuracy
 A passion for social media and the ability to use platforms in a strategic manner
 Experience of managing a website
 Experience of producing in-house publications
 Excellent organisational skills, pace and the ability to multi-task
 A creative eye and the ability to design marketing materials, both with an agency but also via desktop publishing software
 The ability to take good promotional photographs/videos
 Experience of managing budgets and the confidence to negotiate best rates with suppliers
 Willingness to be flexible and support the other members of the team


Desirable Criteria
 Educated to degree level
 Membership of a professional marketing/PR body
 Experience in a similar role in an educational establishment would be an advantage but is by no means essential
