Manchester High School for Girls

YEAR 10 LET LOOSE AT UKFAST

Five of our Year 10 students spent an afternoon at one of the country's most dynamic workplaces, UKFast, following their win in a 'Dragon's Den' style challenge to design and create a new consumer website from scratch.

Anoushka, Alice, Hannah, Eloise and Abigail certainly impressed judges Aaron Saxton and Arlene Bulfin, leaders of the UKFast University, with their interactive video channel 'Need2Know'.

Aiming to answer all of life's '...how do I?' questions, the girls spent the afternoon working with UKFast's technical experts to actually build the site they designed in the classroom.

UKFast is a leading digital firm, supplying managed hosting, colocation and cloud computing services to businesses all over the world. The company’s state-of-the-art headquarters is based on Manchester’s new Science Park, just ten minutes from Manchester High.

The girls were treated to a tour of the inspirational working environment that the team has created and here, Hannah, tells us what they made of it...

"Our trip to UKFast was both exciting and eye opening. The tour amazed all of us and we were taken aback by the fantastic facilities within the building.

"As we watched the workers do their thing we soon realised that this was no normal work place. UKFast is unique,  not only because of the outstanding facilities, but also because of the type of person working there.

"As we entered the tech area we saw two men having a genuine Nerf gun fight and there was also another person tapping a table tennis ball up and down whilst talking to a client on the phone; now that’s what you call multitasking! They were highly motivated but at the same time having an enjoyable day at work.

"We were also struck by the theme of chessboards throughout the building. The chessboards symbolise making the right, logical decisions which definitely links in with the decisions Lawrence Jones(co-founder) made for the business.

"As a group we found this trip incredibly eye opening as we had never come across a career path such as this before. It really showed us that there are a lot more options out there other than the well known paths in life, and, there is one thing that is very true; you can work hard but play hard also!"
