Manchester High School for Girls

A group of students from MHSG made a trip to Cheadle Hulme School on 7th and 8th October to take part in the school’s annual Model United Nations Conference.

All the hard work and preparation for the debate paid off as the girls’ Chinese delegation were crowned runners up of the whole conference.

Anoushka explained: “The conference was an amazing experience. The atmosphere was electric, and we couldn’t wait to embark on the weekend of exciting debate.

“From the moment we were allocated our countries and committees, we, in China, had our eyes set on the prize. We all did our research and went in with a fighting attitude. When the conference began, we came across many excellent delegates. The standard of debate was high but we did not let that faze us.

“In true Manchester High spirt, we persevered, raising our placard high at every occasion and debating to the best of our abilities. We were so excited when our determination paid off. Mrs Heydecker was also a huge inspiration to us, and we could not have done it without her support.”

Anoushka has found Model United Nations incredibly beneficial, as she described, “Taking part in MUN has allowed me to really develop as a person. I never used to take much of an interest in politics or current affairs but MUN definitely kindled my interest in these matters, and made me more empathetic and understanding as we often argue from a country’s perspective, different to our own.

“The debates have also made me more confident speaking in front of large groups of people. MUN makes me feel that there is a solution to the problems our world faces today, and gives me a sense of empowerment. Together we can change things for the better and I really do believe that.”
