Manchester High School for Girls

A very young published author, five-year-old Zainah, has been chosen as the best writer in the Young Writers’ regional creative writing competition, ‘My First Story’.

The competition received over 9,000 entries from school children nationwide, and a selection of the best entries is now featured in the regional ‘My First Story 2017’ books.

Zainah started studying in the Manchester High School for Girls’ Preparatory Department last autumn and she has taken to school life with great enthusiasm.

She was very excited to hear her story had been chosen as the best in the Manchester and Merseyside regions. Zainah said: “I was so happy and surprised. My story in the book is about a greedy witch who doesn’t know what Christmas is and wants to keep all Santa’s presents to herself. It was a fun story to write and had a happy ending.”

Zainah loves school. She said: “My favourite part is working with numbers in our maths class. I also like play time. I would like to write more stories and I think I am going to write one tomorrow!”

Mrs Emma Nash, Head of the Preparatory Department at Manchester High School for Girls, said: “Our girls wrote some lovely stories, and we were so proud that Zainah’s was highlighted in this way. It is fantastic to see that our creative approach to writing is inspiring many budding authors throughout our infant classes.”
