NICOLA IS MANCHESTER’S YOUNG VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Manchester High School for Girls student, Nicola from Junior Sixth, has been crowned Young Volunteer of The Year at the Manchester City Council’s Manchester Sports Awards 2016.
Nicola has been volunteering at the Debdale Outdoor Centre for two years, working with many children, some with difficulties, and introducing them to sailing and windsurfing in a safe environment.
During this time she has also achieved a V100 certificate for her volunteering hours, successfully passed her powerboat exam to receive her powerboat licence and, most recently, achieved an instructor qualification which enables her to run adult courses in sailing.
Nicola said: “Helping children and see them having fun is the best thing about volunteering. I feel I am doing something worthwhile, something I am good at. Our coach at the centre nominated me for the award which was really flattering, and I was amazed to hear my name being called at the awards ceremony!” Added to her award, she has also just been named Volunteer of the Month (November/December) at Debdale.
Nicola is currently weighing her university options. One of her interests include bioscience; immunology and researching treatments for diseases. She said: “I will continue to volunteer in water sports as long as I can, I am likely to join a similar centre to Debdale should I move away from the Manchester area to go to university. I am still not 100% sure what I will end up studying once I finish at MHSG, but I have many options available.”
Many congratulations to Nicola for her fantastic achievements in volunteering and water sports training!
