Preparatory Department celebrate Chinese culture on Mandarin Day
Girls in the Preparatory Department celebrated Chinese culture on Thursday 20th June as they welcomed guests from the Chinese Consulate in Manchester to their Mandarin Day.
The celebration concert showcased everything that the girls have learned in their Mandarin lessons this year and aimed to inspire them to find out more about Chinese culture. The songs, poems and speeches given were aimed around a variety of themes, including family values, tai chi, history and the animal kingdom.
Dr Zhang, Manchester High’s Mandarin Teacher, said: “This was a fantastic way to embrace the spirit of China and celebrate the girls’ fantastic work this year. We developed last year’s speaking competition and made it bigger and better. I hope the girls enjoyed the performance and continue to work hard at their Mandarin.”

What a brilliant afternoon! There was a mixture of all ages performing in the Preparatory Department Chinese Concert, with singing, dancing with fans and speaking. Two of the acts were Leah and Aemen, who recitied their numbers in Chinese and aleena read a beautiful poem called 'Mum's the Best!' When it was my turn with Sujaneeka I was very nervous, but Mrs Heggie really put me at easy by telling us to enjoy it. It was amazing to be on the stage with everybody watching!"
Mandarin has become an important aspect of the curriculum in our Preparatory Department and girls part in a wide range of activities to increase their understanding of the language, history and culture of China.
