Manchester High School for Girls

Ruth Abbott Memorial Tea Party

On Saturday 8 June, around 60 present and former members of staff, alumnae and governors past and present, as well as friends of Ruth Abbott, were welcomed by Head Mistress, Claire Hewitt and Chair of Governors, Liz Spence, at a memorial tea party to honour Ruth’s memory.

Anna Wells, former Senior Teacher, read extracts from the life story which Ruth had written for her own funeral in February, and Sarah Moores, former pupil and member of staff, read her own moving tribute to Ruth.

But the main emphasis of the afternoon, as Ruth would have expected, was the opportunity to mingle, chat and catch up with old friends over tea and cakes.

It was a lovely opportunity for the MHSG community to come together to celebrate a passionate linguist, inspirational teacher and dynamic deputy head whose warmth and sense of fun will never be forgotten, and lives on in the vibrant school we know today.
