Manchester High School for Girls

Manchester High’s tennis team has been crowned winners of the North GB Regional Finals held in Sunderland on Thursday 15th November.

The winning team of Holly Staff (11H), Hannah Wall (10S), Ane Oberholster (9M) and Tanatswa Mutanga (8S) beat Hymers School and Tapton School and have now reached the National Finals to be held at the Bolton Arena on 8th and 9th December.

Tennis at Manchester High is going from strength to strength. Earlier this year, the School was awarded a School of Tennis status and a group of tennis players got the Royal seal of approval from HRH The Earl of Wessex as they showcased their skills at the Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club in March.

Holly, Hannah, Ane and Tanatswa triumphed in Sunderland by winning all of their matches in the day-long competition, something that has never been achieved by a Manchester High team before. They can now proudly call themselves one of the best four school tennis teams in the UK and they are looking forward to the finals next month.

Ane said: “It was such an amazing day. We weren’t nervous at all and were actually quite confident because we’ve worked so hard in training. Winning was really special!”

The girls’ coach, Miss Mottershead, said: “I’m so proud of the girls for their incredible performance. The teams that we played against were all made up of Year 11 students, so this is a massive achievement as we had girls from Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 competing. They showed real talent, determination and team spirit. Well done girls, you are a credit to the School!”
