PREP PUPIL PARTS WITH HAIR TO HELP FAMILY FRIEND
A pupil from the Preparatory Department of Manchester High School for Girls, Isabella (11), has had her long locks chopped off to raise money for a family friend.
In a bid to fundraise for Samantha Smith, who suffers from the serious genetic condition, EDS, determined Isabella decided to part with 45cm of her tresses in a sponsored haircut. To date, she has raised £700 for Samantha and has also donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes wigs for children with cancer.
Isabella explained: “It is important to me to try and help Samantha as much as I can. A total of £150,000 was raised by lots of different people towards life-saving surgery that she underwent in the USA, and I was proud to help with the fundraising. We need to continue to raise money as there are only a few doctors in the world who fully understand her condition and the treatments are not affordable without other people’s help.”
Isabella’s mother, Kerry Brophy explained:
“We are so incredibly proud of Isabella, she did not hesitate when deciding to go ahead with the sponsored haircut. She has a very kind heart and was so pleased to raise money for Sam’s ongoing treatment, as well as helping children fighting cancer.”
Pupils in the Preparatory Department of Manchester High are no strangers to charity work; girls are actively involved in fundraising events throughout the year, raising thousands of pounds for both local and national beneficiaries.
Isabella commented: “Everyone in the Prep Department recently ran a mile to raise money for Sport Relief. We also have charity cake sales which are great as I enjoy baking and love to get involved. It would be fantastic to be able to sell cakes and think of other ways to help Samantha.”
