Manchester High School for Girls

A group of Senior Sixth Formers have triumphed in the national Student Investor Challenge by reaching the semi-finals of this exciting stock market competition.

Over 4,000 student teams in the UK have been taking part in the London Institute of Banking & Finance challenge in which students purchase virtual stocks in FTSE 500 companies in a realistic stock market scenario.

The girls had to research into the companies before investing in them, and they learned how unpredictable the stock market can be, as Annabel explained: “We realised that one small thing could have a massive effect on the price of multiple stocks and that sometimes luck was a key factor in the outcome.

“As part of the second round which commences today, Monday 19th February, we will be given a selection of stocks at the start of the week. We must reserach them and then predict the closing price of at the end of the week. Points will be given depending on how close the prediction is to the correct price at close.”

The semi-final round will last for the next four weeks - we wish the girls best of luck in this tough competition!
