Extra-curricular Opportunities

Students can explore creative pursuits through incredible drama productions, art competitions, and a range of brilliant musical groups and performance opportunities. Sports enthusiasts excel in netball, hockey, athletics, and tennis, with teams competing at regional and national levels. Academically-orientated societies in subjects from debating to politics encourage intellectual curiosity, while our Model United Nations team hosts an incredible conference at school every year. Our Young Enterprise and Junior Traders programmes regularly win awards. There are also lots of opportunities for students to collaborate with sixth formers from Manchester Grammar School on leadership, music, debating and drama.

Sixth Formers can take part in international sporting and cultural visits, philosophy and debating societies, art exhibitions, concerts and school productions. They also enjoy visits from speakers as diverse as charity representatives, MPs, journalists and motivational speakers.

Leadership Opportunities

Leadership opportunities abound through the Head Girl Team and Ivy Prefects, student council, house captains, and peer mentoring programmes. Community service projects, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, and charitable fundraising initiatives develop compassion and global awareness.

These experiences build confidence, foster friendships, and develop the well-rounded individuals our rapidly changing world needs.

Trips and Excursions

At Manchester High School for Girls, trips are an important part of learning. They give pupils the chance to see their subjects in context, explore new places and gain first-hand experiences that support their studies.

Sport

Sport is an important part of life at Manchester High, with opportunities for every student to have fun, get active, develop skills and enjoy being part of a team.

Research from the Girls School Association suggests that girls play more sports in Girls only schools and for the longest time, in comparison to girls in other schools. In fact girls are nearly five times more likely to play cricket and 30% more likely to play football in a girls only school.

Our impressive facilities include a sports hall, fitness suite, dance studio, climbing wall, four outdoor netball courts, tennis courts, floodlit astroturf and a 20 metre swimming pool all under one roof!

Taking part in sport builds self-esteem, confidence and teamwork, so we encourage all students to get involved, whatever their ability. For those competing at representative level, our Elite Pathway offers tailored support. MHSG teams regularly compete in prestigious local, regional and national competitions across a range of disciplines. Our under 13’s, under 14’s and under 16’s Hockey teams made the national finals in 2024 /2025.
