Manchester High School for Girls

Ruth Abbott Memorial Tea Party

Saturday 8th June 2019

The announcement of Ruth Abbott’s death in January this year prompted a flood of affectionate, touching and often hilarious tributes from old girls and former staff which demonstrate the pivotal role that she played in the life of MHSG as an institution and in the lives and subsequent careers of many old girls.

We realise that many of you were unable to attend Ruth’s funeral as it was in the working week and in Yorkshire, and so Head Mistress, Claire Hewitt, is holding a memorial tea party at School in Ruth’s honour on Saturday 8 June at 2.30 pm.

There will be an unveiling of a glass block in the donor window, bought in Ruth’s honour, an exhibition of the tributes received by the archivists, as well as examples of the photographs and documents which have been donated to the school archive in her memory.

There will be a few formal words, but the emphasis will be on giving people time to chat and catch up which we think will be in keeping with Ruth’s joie de vivre and love of a ‘good natter’.  We hope that Ruth’s close friends from Gargrave will be able to attend; it will be a chance for them to experience at first hand the high regard that we have for Ruth and her lasting legacy in MHSG’s warm, vibrant school community.
