Manchester High School for Girls

Extra-curricular

Be part of a highly-motived community

Extra-curricular opportunities are an extremely important feature of life at Manchester High which continue into the Sixth Form. We believe that the confidence and enjoyment gained from extra-curricular activities and achievements, and being part of a highly-motivated community, underpin academic success.

Cultural and social opportunities

There is a wide range of cultural and social opportunities open to students, both at lunchtime and after school. Involvement in extra-curricular activities and events is considered important in developing the confidence and interpersonal skills necessary for professional and personal fulfilment. Students are encouraged to participate in at least one extra-curricular activity. They must, however, learn to manage their free time carefully so that they do not fall behind in academic work. Homework and coursework commitments must be given the highest priority.

Students may join the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme or take part in the Young Enterprise Scheme or the Community Sports Leaders’ Award. There is also the opportunity to participate in a Mock Trial Competition and in the Model United Nations conferences.

Sixth Formers can enjoy residential theatre visits to London and Stratford and collaborate with the students of The Manchester Grammar School on various theatrical projects throughout the year. They may also become members of the Thursday Singers, a longstanding partnership with Manchester Grammar.

Along with other students, Sixth Formers take part in international sporting and cultural visits, philosophy and debating societies, art exhibitions, concerts and school productions. They also enjoy visits from speakers as diverse as charity representatives, MPs, journalists and motivational speakers.

Take part or help Organise

In addition to sporting and musical activities, students may participate in or organise, clubs and workshops in Literature, Drama, Art, Technology, Film or Science. They may join the Debating Society run in conjunction with The Manchester Grammar School or take part in debating competitions. Editorial teams of Sixth Formers also produce the school newspaper.

Sixth Formers participate in the PLUS Scheme which encourages them to develop organisational and leadership skills through running clubs for Junior girls or contributing to a range of community service activities.

Sixth Formers also have a role to play in carrying out essential school duties. All extra-curricular activity is monitored and can be cited in university references. Sixth Formers are invited to apply for advertised internal leadership posts, many of which involve working with younger students.

Business experience

Business experience is gained from the challenge of the Young Enterprise Scheme and Sixth Formers have a leading role in the organisation of large and small charity events. Students are encouraged to be ambitious and enterprising in raising funds for a range of local and national charities, and each year they work hard in this respect. There is a thriving branch of Amnesty International and the students organise their own faith societies.

The School is strong in cultural, creative and leadership activities, all of which extend the curriculum outside the classroom and foster strong friendships.
