Manchester High School for Girls

MHSG's Under-14 Hockey team are celebrating this week as they were crowned Greater Manchester Champions in the National Schools Competition at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls on Tuesday.

The team made up from a mixture of Year 8 and Year 9 players, and sporting their brand new school sports kit the girls were motivated and eager to get started!

In their first match, the team  played Cheadle Hulme School who they beat in last year’s finals of the Under-13 competitions on flicks. The match ended 0-0 with MHSG dominating play but not being able to convert chances.

In the second match the girls played against Stockport Grammar School. The game was very much one way traffic with MHSG winning comfortably by 5-0.

The third game saw MHSG take on  the hosts, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls. MHSG dominated again, however, after hitting everything but the back board, the girls were held to a 0-0 draw.

In the final game it was crucial that the girls beat Loreto Grammar School. Not only that, MHSG needed to score goals to make sure  they finished in the top two to guarantee a place in the next round. The tired girls contained to battle and, by half time, they were 3-0 up.  The second half was slightly less thrilling but MHSG held onto the score and won 3-0.

Their hockey coach, Miss Rowley, said: "We were thrilled to see our girls win the competition.  MHSG  will now progress through to the North West Semi Finals of the National Schools Competition.

"The girls played so well and never gave up, even if their legs started to. They fought as a team and the attacking play at times was amazing to watch. Well done to them, we are extremely proud!"
