Music flourishes at Manchester High School for Girls. Each week more than 350 individual instrumental and singing lessons take place in the department, delivered by our fantastic team of 25 visiting teachers.
The Music department aims to be as inclusive as possible, yet maintain the high quality of what we do. Be it massed singing in assembly, joining in a Year 7 beat boxing workshop or membership of our Orchestra and Choirs, there are opportunities for girls of all ages and abilities.
We aim to include every instrumentalist in at least one of the department’s ensembles, a number of which are student-led, including our Jazz Band and Vocal Ensemble. We provide a wide range of performing activities that are open to all, including informal monthly ‘Twilight’ concerts and competitive music festivals, while more advanced musicians are challenged in concerto opportunities, starring roles in musicals and coached chamber ensembles.
Annual performances take place at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester Cathedral, St. Ann’s Church, and, of course, at School. A number of Manchester High girls attend the RNCM Junior School and are members of the Hallé Youth Orchestra and Choirs, Stockport Youth Orchestra and the National Children’s Orchestra and Choir. In addition several of our girls have been offered Oxbridge Choral awards in recent years.
The department runs regular trips to concerts and operas in the UK, as well as giving performances abroad. We have visited the Netherlands, Austria and Spain with our String Orchestra, Wind Band and Senior Choir, and most recently took a group of students to Berlin in the summer of 2018.
