Sixth Form Admissions

The Sixth Form at Manchester High School for Girls offers the opportunity to specialise in subjects you are passionate about, develop leadership skills and prepare for life beyond school. It is a place of firsts, where students take steps into greater independence, experience advanced study for the first time and begin shaping their future ambitions.

We warmly welcome applications from students of all backgrounds—whether joining us from independent or maintained schools or relocating from overseas. At Manchester High School for Girls, we seek individuals who demonstrate curiosity, potential, and a genuine love of learning who will flourish in our vibrant community and embrace the exceptional academic and co-curricular opportunities available here.

How to Apply

Applications for September 2026 should be made online via our Online Admissions Platform. Reference requests for predicted grades will be made to current schools.

Entry Requirements

  • At least grade 7 or above at GCSE in the subjects you wish to study
  • Good passes in English and Mathematics
  • A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 7 or above
  • Applicants wishing to study a Science subject must have grade 7 or above in Mathematics

Scholarships and Bursaries
A limited number of scholarships and bursaries are available for girls entering the Sixth Form. Awards are made at the discretion of the Head Mistress and are based on GCSE results and, for bursaries, household income.

Apply

Use the online portal to apply for a place. Applications should be received by Spring 2026 be invited for interview before GCSE examinations begin.
The admissions team will make a reference request from the applicant’s current school as part of the application process. The reference would require predicted grades.

We welcome applications from students who expect to achieve:

  • At least five GCSEs at grade 7 or above, including good passes in English and Mathematics
  • At least a grade 7 at GCSE in the subjects you wish to study at A-level
  • If you studied Double Award Science at GCSE, you will need a grade 7 or above in Mathematics to study Biology, Chemistry or Physics in our Sixth Form.

What we look for

We look for Sixth Form students who are curious, motivated, and eager to contribute to the wider life of the School. We value independent thinkers who are ready to embrace academic challenge and take ownership of their learning. Meeting our entrance requirements shows that you have a strong foundation for success. With the right mindset and commitment, you’ll thrive in our dynamic and supportive Sixth Form environment.

We offer scholarships for Music and limited financial assistance (bursaries) for students joining us for Sixth Form. You can apply for these in online application portal.

Assessment

Applicants who are expected to meet the entry criteria will be invited for interview with the Head Mistress and the Director of Sixth Form. Interviews usually take place during the Spring and Summer terms in 2026.

Music Scholarships

Applicants who have applied for a Music Scholarship are expected to have achieved ABRSM Grade 7 standard or above on at least one instrument, plus strong general musicianship. A second instrument does not need to be at the same standard. A good singing voice is an advantage.

Candidates invited to audition will:

  • Perform two pieces of their choice (one may be on a second instrument plus voice)
  • Complete aural tests and one piece of sight-reading on their chosen instrument
  • Take part in a short discussion about their musical experience

*Scholarships are a percentage of fees and are not a fully funded place.

Offers

Offers are emailed to applicants soon after interview. All offer holders are invited to a Sixth Form Induction Form in June 2026. Once GCSE results have been received, we will confirm your offer. Offers need to be accepted in the online application portal as soon as possible to ensure a smooth start to Year 12 at the start of September.

A limited number of academic scholarships may be awarded for excellence in GCSE performance, at the discretion of the Head Mistress.
