BURSARIES
The Governors have made funds available to award a number of Bursaries for students entering at the age of 10 or 11 in September 2008, based on their educational attainment and their parents’ income. This is to ensure that, in keeping with the traditions established by its Founders, the School continues to provide for academically able girls whose financial circumstances would otherwise prevent them from attending.
A proportion of these bursary awards will offer assistance with tuition fees according to a sliding scale that is linked to family income. In some cases, maximum assistance, covering full tuition fees, may be given. Students from families in receipt of Income Support may qualify for free school lunches. In addition, pupils living at a distance from school may qualify for an annual grant towards the costs of travel. A uniform grant of up to £300 may also be available at the beginning of the first year in school. To be considered for any of these extra grants (which are limited), parents must make a written request to the Head Mistress following their acceptance of a place.
Where there are two or more sisters attending Manchester High School for Girls at the same time and both in receipt of financial assistance, parents may qualify for a 20% reduction in their contribution to fees only under the Bursary Scheme.
Some bursaries will be awarded on the basis of an annual grant, the maximum amount of which will be specified when a place is offered. All awards, whether calculated according to family income or on a flat rate, will be based on a combination of academic merit and a parental statement of need. They will be subject to annual review of income.
Details will be confidential but supporting documentation will be required. Parents who wish to apply for financial assistance should indicate this on the Registration Form, which is enclosed with the prospectus, and a Bursary Application Form will be sent to them.
The closing date for registration is Monday 7 January 2008.
Entitlement to fee remission through scholarship or bursary will continue throughout a student’s years in the School, subject to the above conditions and high standards of behaviour, attendance, punctuality and work.
