Where Are They Now?
Dr Shirley Reekie Class of '71

UPON leaving MHSG I earned a degree from I.M. Marsh College of Physical Education, followed by a BEd in Physical Education from The University of Liverpool. As a lifelong sports fanatic I always knew this would be where my career would progress, having successfully represented the School in most sports.

Next, I attended The University of Leeds and obtained an MA in Physical Education. Following three wonderful years of teaching at Keswick School, I headed for The Ohio State University where I earned a PhD in Physical Education.

Since 1982, I have been employed at San José State University progressing to Professor of Kinesiology.

In 1986, I published my first book on sailing and was elected to the Board of the International Society for Physical Education and Sport (ISCPES), serving as President from 1996 to 1999. I made presentations in Kuwait, the People’s Republic of China, Kenya, Japan, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, and the UK. I received the C. Lynn Vendien Scholarship of ISCPES, and the Arthur Broten Young Scholar Award from the Western College Physical Education Society.

In 2006, I became chair of the department of kinesiology and taught in all programs including sailing, kayaking, sport in America, history of sport and physical education, writing workshop, senior seminar, research methods, analysis of research, historical interpretations of human performance, and international physical education and sport.

Outside of work, my love affair with sports continues; I won Gold Medals at the World Masters Rowing Regattas in Belgium and Montreal. I was President of Los Gatos Rowing Club for school and masters age athletes, from 2002-2004. I also retain an interest in dinghy sailing and return to the UK every summer to stay with family to compete in my 420 dinghy in Anglesey!
