Golf Star Sana Has The Drive To Succeed

Watch out Michelle Wie because a promising young golfer from Heaton Mersey is hot on your heels.

Sana Ahmed, age 11, only took up the sport a little over a year ago but already has a collection of silverware to her name.

Sana, a pupil at Manchester High School for Girls, won her first tournament recently over 18 holes. Despite being the youngest entrant in the Under 18s event, she beat 30 other competitors in the Stapleford Tournament, at Heaton Moor Golf Club.  She followed this up with success in a Texas Scramble team competition at Didsbury Golf Club.

Sana’s ability is such that she has started to provide weekly coaching sessions to her Dad, Ahmed.

Sana explained: “Both of my Grandads are keen golfers and this is where my interest stems from. More recently, I have been taking lessons at Didsbury Golf Club and trying to pass on some tips to my Dad.

Playing a good round of golf often comes down to getting off to a good start and keeping your confidence high.

"I never thought I would win an event so soon and my aim now is to carry on improving, reduce my handicap and to win a few more trophies next year,” she enthused.

Her father, Ahmed, added:  “I think I will need a few more coaching sessions from Sana before I can compete with her, but she is already something of a sporting all-rounder. She recently achieved her brown belt in karate and also enjoys swimming, trampolining and fencing.”

MHSG Head of Physical Education, Mrs Sarah Newman said: “Sana is showing a lot of promise across a number of sports and is always eager to learn more and improve her techniques. I am delighted to learn of her golfing achievements and I am confident that other sporting successes will follow in the future.”
