Message from the Chairman of Governors

During the early 50's in the Prep, which in those days was a converted home and garden in West Didsbury, I enjoyed country dancing, eurhythmics and rounders. Later, in the Senior School, my enthusiasm turned to gymnastics, swimming (at the Victoria baths!), netball, hockey and tennis, on the Birchfields site, culminating in a very special year for me as School Tennis Captain in the Sixth Form.

Physical Education was always a very significant and enjoyable part of my time as a pupil at Manchester High School for Girls.  Apart from the obvious benefits to health and psychological well-being, PE taught me so much about the importance of good communication and teamwork, about the virtues of tolerance, honesty and courtesy and the exhilaration of participating and achieving. These values have stayed with me and have been reflected in so many aspects of my life; as a student, at work, as a parent and in my leisure time too. I still enjoy exercise classes and continue to play team sports

I was delighted, therefore when my fellow Governors and I made the decision to build our own new Sports Complex, encompassing our existing swimming pool and providing diversity for all abilities and interests. A dance studio and fitness suite, as well as a viewing gallery and full-size internal pitch for team sports, ensure that the pupils in School today, and in the future, will have state of the art facilities to establish a healthy pattern of physical exercise which will become integral to their lifestyle beyond school days.
