ABOUT US

The Manchester Society meets once a year in addition to the June Federation Lunch, which is always held in School. The meetings provide an opportunity for catching up on news, renewing school friendships and listening to a speaker, who is usually a former pupil and sometimes a member of staff.

At our March 2008 meeting we enjoyed a visit from Helen Ireland (née Charnock) and Dr Stan Ireland. They gave us an illustrated talk on events and travels relating to the jobs that followed their degrees in Classics, Helen as a Science Librarian and Stan as a Classics lecturer with interests in many areas of the subject including ancient coinage.

The AGM of the Manchester Society was held on Saturday 21 June 2008 during the Federation Lunch and AGM.

Our meeting on 13 October 2008 was a special gathering to mark the retirement of Mrs Lee-Jones. The choice of early evening proved to be a good one, as it enabled Suzie Thompson and Beverley Rubin of the Development Office to join us at the end of their working day. Members were very pleased to meet former pupil Suzie and to wish her well in her post as Development Director.

We presented Mrs Lee-Jones with a signed copy of an illustrated book, written by former pupil Rowena Loverance, in which the depiction of Christian ideals in art is discussed with a global perspective surveying the past and present, and looking into the future.

We thanked Mrs Lee-Jones for her commitment to the School, for her participation in our Society meetings and for updating us on school news. Mrs Lee-Jones thanked us in turn for our support and assured us that, as a vice-president of the Old Girls' Federation, she will continue to value our friendship.
