A passionate belief in the value of girls' education both for its own sake and for the benefit of the wider community, a sense of civic pride and responsibility as well as a robust determination to change society for the better were the guiding principles of those far-sighted 19th century Manchester citizens who founded Manchester High School for Girls.

In 1873 they launched a public subscription to found a school:

"To impart to the scholars the very best education which could be given and to fit them for any future which may be before them."

Over 125 people subscribed to the appeal. Some donations, of course, were small and some substantial. In the end, however, these pioneers of women's education in the North West had collected enough money to open the doors of Manchester High School for Girls for the first time on 19th January 1874, as one of the first schools in the north of the country offering girls a genuinely academic education.

In the 21st century the School remains true to the spirit of the Founders. We see ourselves as part of the community, locally, nationally and, of course, globally. We are committed to giving our students the very best education. Girls receive a rigorous academic training, but learn as well the importance of social responsibility, a sense of community and an appreciation of diversity in our multi-cultural society.
