Celebrity Chef Visits MHSG

Celebrity Chef, Simon Rimmer, went back to school to teach students at Manchester High some of his mouth-watering recipes. He was rewarded for his efforts with the title of ‘Cook of the Week’, an accolade usually given to a student following their performance in a Food Technology lesson.

Simon, a father-of-two, is co-presenter of the BBC’s ‘Something for the Weekend’ and runs award-winning vegetarian restaurant Greens in Didsbury, and Hale restaurant Earle.

The accomplished television presenter and author said: “Working with students and introducing them to new ways of cooking is very satisfying. The facilities at MHSG are fantastic and it is obvious that the girls here are eager to learn new things.

He continued: “Being named ‘Cook of the Week’ is an honour and I’m just glad that I can give students something to think about in terms of their style of cooking and their experimentation with food and different flavours.”

Students watched intently as Simon created two tried and tested main courses of cod with creamy clam and tomato sauce and sea bass with potato rosti. The master class continued with the creation of two sweet treats including an individual banana tarte tatin and caramelised strawberry Eton mess.

Head of Food Technology, Jan Fordham commented: “The girls love cooking and the practical aspect gives them a level of freedom to experiment and show their creative culinary skills. They have really enjoyed watching Simon make these delicious dishes and it has given them real confidence to try out new and exciting ideas in the kitchen.”
