POPULAR BBC Radio 4 magazine programme Woman’s Hour brought the MHSG Archive to worldwide attention in November.
The feature documented the efforts of our Archivist, Dr Christine Joy, to catalogue the large collection of artefacts, photographs and school records dating back to the foundation of the School in 1874.
The project has been supported with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, enabling the archive to be referenced online. A series of Young Historian web pages are also available to primary school children from across the UK.
The Woman’s Hour feature included contributions from MHSG Head Mistress Mrs Christine Lee-Jones, Chair of Governors Mrs Christine Walker, former pupil Mrs Doris Angel MBE, Dr Joy and Year 11 pupils Sarah Humphreys and Anna Taylor (pictured).
Explained Mrs Lee-Jones: “We have an archive that is of national importance in relation to the history of the education of girls in this country, and we are fortunate to have such an assiduous Archivist in Dr Christine Joy.”
Dr Joy added: “Manchester High continues to play a leading role in a project overseen by the Girls’ School Association that encourages all independent girls’ schools to develop and promote their archives, and to make them more widely accessible.”
