Teenagers from the German city of Mannheim enjoyed a week at Manchester High as part of an exchange programme that first began in 1988.

The girls, hosted by Year 10 and Year 11 MHSG students, enjoyed a busy week in which time they visited regional landmarks and tourist attractions, as well as enjoying lessons at Grangethorpe Road.

There was also an opportunity to research Manchester High School's history during a lesson with our School Archivist, Dr Joy (see picture below).

Many lasting friendships have developed over the years as the exchange programme has gone from strength-to-strength. Next year's recipricol visit by MHSG students will mark the 20th anniversary of the exchange and provide cause for celebration.

Mannheim  the second largest city in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Württemberg and home to over 300,000 residents. The school is based in the suburb of Feudenheim which used to be a quiet farming village and many period properties remain along the narrow streets that form the old part of the village.

In the 1920’s Feudenheim became very popular with wealthy factory owners and professionals and they built their stylish Art Deco villas in the newer part of the village.  With new houses built in the 60’s and 70’s Feudenheim has a cosy yet elegant feel.

All the pupils live close to school and either walk or cycle to school. Since German schools often finish at lunchtime, the girls really enjoy the freedom of meeting friends in the local ice cream parlours and sports clubs in the afternoon or catching the tram outside school into the centre of Mannheim.
