The School’s 94 Senior Sixth Formers achieved a 100% pass rate, with 96% of all examinations being passed at either A or B grades.

This represents an increase of 3% on the 2006 results that placed the MHSG within the UK’s Top 20 highest achieving Independent Schools.

Furthermore, 74% of all examinations were passed at A grade.

Joy for (from left) Louisa Shackleton, Bethany Minors and Alice Lighton. All achieved 4 A grades in their A Levels AND were awarded a distinction. This provides confirmation that all three are among the best A Level students in the UK in their respective subjects.

Other key achievements saw:

• 10 students confirm their university places at either Cambridge or Oxford
• 6 students awarded distinctions, placing them among the best in the country in specific subjects
• 19 students attain 4 A Levels with straight A grades
• Identical grades for twins Sophie and Alexandra Pollitt who will now follow the same path to The University of Birmingham where they will study Business Management with a Year in Industry.
• Confirmation that Louisa Shackleton, from Marple, will become the fifth generation of her family to study at St John’s College, Cambridge.

MHSG Head Mistress Mrs Christine Lee-Jones said:

“To return record A Level results for the second successive year is a source of great pride for both the students and the MHSG teaching staff. 

“I have no doubt that many will forge successful careers and become leaders in their respective professions, and we all wish them every success with their university education,” she added.

INDIVIDUAL STORIES

Angelina Goff  scored 5 straight A grades in Chemistry, Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Physics and Russian. She will now study Chemistry at Oxford, where she will join her brother Peter (Russian and German), and boyfriend James (Materials Science). Both are former Manchester Grammar School students.

A delighted Angelina commented: “It has taken a lot of hard work, and I am grateful for all of the support from my teachers at Manchester High, but I am thrilled with my results and looking forward to everything that lies ahead.”

Avni Hindocha achieved 4 A grades in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and German, and two A grades in French and Critical Thinking at AS Level. She will study Medicine at UCL (London).

Chloe Lewis returned 690 UCAS points, the School’s highest aggregate points score, via her A grade passes in Biology, French (including a Merit), and History, and AS passes in Chemistry, Critical Thinking, Mathematics, Physics and Spanish.

“I had only returned from a holiday in Crete when I received a telephone call asking me to come into School early to collect my results. I thought it was good news but that did not stop me being awake for most of the night before.

“I have a place at Warwick to study Politics and International Studies, and will spend a period of time in Washington. I am delighted with my results and wish to thank all of my teachers, especially Mrs Heydecker and Mrs Bennett who have been inspirational,” she added.

A double success for twin sisters Alexandra and Sophie Pollitt (ABB). Both will study Business Management at The University of Birmingham.

Twins Sophie and Alexandra Pollitt opened their examination envelopes at precisely the same time…and discovered they had achieved exactly the same A Level grades. As if that coincidence did not suffice, both are bound for The University of Birmingham to study Business Management with a Year in Industry.

A proud Mother, Mrs Corinne Pollitt  said: “They both joined Manchester High School seven years ago and have always achieved similar results, but we never thought for a moment they would end up with exactly the same A Level grades, and both secure places at Birmingham on the same course.”

Alexandra added: “We have helped each other with revision and generally spurred each other on, and it is probably of no surprise that we will house share together in our second year at Birmingham.”

Louisa Shackleton becomes the fifth generation of her family to go to St. John’s College, Cambridge, but the first female member. The first family member to attend was her

Great Great Great Grandfather, John Baily, in 1825, while her Grandfather’s cousin, Hubert Horton-Smith Hartley, later became the President of the Cambridge University Boat Club.

Louisa returned 4 A grades in her Biology, French, German and English A Levels, as well as a Grade A in her Critical Thinking AS Level. This included a Distinction in English, and Merits in German and French.

She said: “My teachers have been incredibly supportive in helping me to reach my goal. It has taken a lot of hard work to get this far and my immediate priority is to put some time aside to celebrate with my friends before preparing for university.”
