Heathcotes Masterclass

One of Manchester’s top chefs, Eve Worswick Head Chef at Simply Heathcotes, delivered a master class in the traditional arts of home cooking at MHSG in November.

Eve Worswick, the Head Chef at Simply Heathcotes, backed Manchester High’s commitment to conventional Home Economics.

She said:

"Like many professional chefs nationwide, at Heathcotes we believe the best way to ensure our children eat healthy, fresh and well balanced diets is to teach them how to cook."

Jan Fordham, Head of the Food Department, said:

"Food Technology teaches about the manufacture and mass production of food and certainly has some value, but Home Economics shows children how to cook using basic skills and fresh ingredients."

Manchester High teaches food throughout the Senior School, with Food Technology as an option at GCSE and Home Economics also available at A Level.

As part of their transition programme Sixth Form students are shown how to rustle up quick, nutritious dishes in preparation for University life, such as soups, pastas and salads. A Cookery Club has also been introduced as an extra curricular lunchtime activity, for Year 7 and Year 8, so that they learn about healthy eating patterns.
