Extracting their own DNA and making soap were just two of the fascinating experiments carried out by budding scientists, Priyanka Comar and Sarah Ellis during a chemistry camp at the University of York, organised annually by the Salter’s Institute.
Priyanka and Sarah were among 50 participants, invited to learn new skills and test their knowledge at the four day session.
The camp gave the participants a real taste of student life, by allowing them to experience the laboratories and the halls of residence.
They both agreed it was a fantastic challenge and said:
“It was an experience that we will never forget. We took part in some challenging and interesting practicals, including extracting our own DNA from cells, preparing a sample of aspirin, making soap and making a crash helmet for an egg! There were also plenty of fun activities to keep us entertained in the evenings, including bowling and a ghost walk. In addition to the chemistry, we also met lots of new people from across the country. Chemistry Camp really is a beneficial experience and we would jump at the chance to take part in it again!”
