MANCHESTER High has introduced the teaching of Mandarin. Girls in Years 3 and 4 will be given lessons and Senior students will have the chance to learn the language in twilight sessions or, for Sixth Formers, as part of their extra activities. The girls will also find out about China's culture, history and geography.
A specialist teacher, Mrs Jin Cox, has been appointed and this innovation in language teaching has caused much excitement. Headmistress Mrs Lee-Jones says: "China is the fastest growing economy in the world and those who speak and read their official language will have an advantage in developing long term commercial relationships".
To celebrate the announcement of the initiative, the Prep girls who will be taking lessons were given a special lunch at the Yang Sing Restaurant.
