Head Mistress Mrs Christine Lee-Jones paid tribute to the 94 departing Senior Sixth Formers for their contributions and hard work during their time at MHSG.

“You are about to start new chapters in your lives as you prepare for university or a gap year. There are so many opportunities awaiting you, so seize them. Do not let your fears get in the way.”

“You possess all the usual attributes of Manchester High School for Girls students and we hope the School has given you a firm foundation with which to build a successful future,” she said.

A celebratory meal had preceded the presentations of awards by former MHSG student Claire Broughton. Having worked on Channel 4 comedies Spaced and Black Books, Claire went on to work as Producer’s Assistant on Fernando Meirelles’ critically-acclaimed film, The Constant Gardener.

The movie, filmed in Kenya, inspired Claire to co-found a charitable trust to improve sanitation and education opportunities for indigenous communities. The Constant Gardener Trust also promotes responsible film-making.

Claire, who attributed much of her success to her education at MHSG, and subsequently, a French and German degree from The University of Bristol, said:

“The Trust has become an amazing facet to my life and brought me into contact with people and organisations that have proven awe-inspiring.

“My languages have been an absolute bonus for me. Of course, you win a job with personality but you are helping yourselves by offering language skills to future employers,” she added.

Outgoing Head Girl Emma Bluff presented bouquets to both Miss Broughton and Mrs Lee-Jones, and on behalf of the Senior Sixth Formers, paid tribute to their Head Mistress and her staff for providing constant support and a listening ear.
